If you’ve ever wondered how your brand stacks up against your competitors on social media, you’re not alone.

Understanding where you stand in the noisy digital landscape can help you refine your strategy, improve engagement, and ultimately drive more business.

That’s where a social media competitor analysis comes in handy. And no need to start from scratch!

Whether you’re looking to improve your content, increase engagement, or simply keep track of your competitors’ moves, our free Social Media Competitor Analysis Template download offers a structured approach to gathering and analyzing key data.

Why every financial brand needs to perform social media competitor analysis

We probably don’t need to sell you on this but …

A solid social media competitor analysis can reveal a lot about what’s working—and what’s not—across your social platforms.

For example, should your finance brand simp with some gen-z slang or keep it a little more corporate?

By benchmarking your brand against others, you’ll get insights into potential areas for growth, discover new content ideas, and learn which platforms deserve more attention.

You’ll be better equipped to make data-driven decisions that impact your overall social media strategy.

How to get the most out of this template

Here’s how to fill in each section of the template for the most accurate results:

  1. Enter your own brand. The first row of the template is reserved for [Your Brand]. This will allow you to benchmark yourself against the competitors you’ll add below.

  2. List the social media platforms you’re analyzing. The first column under the “Brand” heading lets you list each platform you’re reviewing. Common platforms include Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Who knows, maybe you will discover someplace you ought to be but aren’t yet?

  3. Fill in total follower counts. Under this column, input follower counts for each brand across the various platforms. This gives you a quick snapshot of which competitors have a larger or smaller audience compared to your brand.

  4. Analyze post frequency. In this column, document how often each brand is posting, be it daily, weekly, or … whenever.  Understanding post frequency is essential because it can tell you how active and engaged the brand is with its audience, if the channel is worth engaging with. You might even uncover strategic mistakes one competitor is making compared to another without first being involved in the channel at all.

  5. Calculate engagement rates. Next, you’ll want to measure engagement. This column helps capture how much interaction (likes, comments, shares) each brand receives relative to their followers. A higher engagement rate usually indicates more compelling content and a stronger connection with the audience.

  6. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses. Now comes the more subjective part. In the “Strengths” column, note what each brand does well on that platform. Do they post stunning visuals? Are they quick to respond to comments? On the flip side, use the “Weaknesses” column to jot down any areas where the brand might be falling short—like inconsistent posting or lackluster engagement.

  7. Add additional observations. Is a brand leveraging influencer collaborations, or running frequent promotions? These types of notes will help you see the bigger picture.

This analysis will not only highlight what’s working for your competitors but also show you where you can step up your own game.

Whether it’s improving the quality of your posts, increasing engagement, or simply diversifying the platforms you’re using, this data-driven approach will give you the actionable insights you need to thrive in the competitive world of social media marketing.
